The Heirloom Basin can be used as a standalone outdoor hydroponic garden. This can be done in two ways:
Kratky hydroponics is a passive hydroponic method that uses no pumps or electricity. It relies on the water level dropping for plant roots to breathe in oxygen. Our Heirloom Planters use this method.Ā
Kratky hydroponics doesn't grow as vigorously as a hydroponic method that is actively aerated with a pump or airstone - but it is low maintenance and easy to do.
The kit comes with everything you would need to grow via the kratky method.
Deep Water Culture (DWC) hydroponics features a water basin with a pump or an airstone providing oxygenation to the plant roots. The benefit of this method is increased growth and lower risk of roots wilting. DWC is the method used in our Sun Garden, Sun Shelf and previous models including the Family Farm, EcoKitchen and Terragarden.
To grow with DWC using this heirloom basin, you will need a power adaptor (which we have available in store), and a coupler.
I am loving them so far. Not fully tested as my tomato plants are only about 5 - 6" tall, so the next test comes when I need to pot them.

My tomato plant showing signs of malnutrition with patchy looking leaves in my Mr. Frothergills Hydrogarden Elite & I put 3 squirts of the Gathera nutrition into the system & now the plant looks so much better & it's actually started flowering! I'm pretty happy with that result & the plant nutrition from Gathera is simple to use without having to mix it up beforehand.

With a reduction in mouths to feed, I have just repurposed my Family Farm to house 4 x 2L heirloom planters on the top shelf for zero-maintenance salad and leafy greens. I like the look of this setup - there will be a lot more airflow around the plants than the old basins had provided, and less competition for light, and I expect quite infrequent topping up of water/nutrients will be required. I also removed the middle shelf of the FF, and suspended a trellis in the gap ready for me to set up a couple of 10L planters and try my hand at tomatoes using the double-height space.

First of all- what a lovely professional company! I got a reply to my query from Tamara the same evening and she reassured me that the clip would attach securely to the tricky vertical banister and that the lights would work at an angle needed.And they do!
I didn't realise the lights are so bendy and adjustable.Fantastic product! I hope my half dead sun deprived plants come alive.Update in 6 months...

I'm a first time hydroponic gardener. I love how the sunshelf 3 looks in my living room, how it was easy to assemble. Love how to cables are minimalistic and the clip-on lights with timer are the best! I sew the seeds before holiday for almost 2 weeks and came back healthy seedlings without any watering.

Design is simple and reasonably easy to assemble - that said, the assembly instructions could be a little more detailed. For a first timer hydroponic gardener - there could be more detailed instructions and guidance on set-up of the tank / pump, etc. For example, is the pump supposed to run 24/7 or intervals. A couple of teething issues / recommendations; a) one of the grommets was missing from one of the trays, b) the screw size or hole size on the brackets that hold the trays could / should be a little more snug - so that brackets donāt lean forward, c) you could consider putting adjustable feet on the base, d) the pipe elbows should just be standard kit versus after-market
So great I donāt have to fiddle around hanging overhead strip lights

Good light, plants seem to be doing well
However I would love it to be at least 20-30cm taller, most of my house plants touch the light so Iāve had to put it up on blocks
Perhaps you could sell separate set of longer legs for it? That would be such a great addition!

I've bought 2 of them & I've grown microgreens & sprouts. I'm currently growing pea morgan & pink kale in 1 of them & red cabbage & rocket in the other one. Everything seems to be growing well. To prevent mould, once the seeds have germinated and exposed to sunlight, it's time to stop spraying them with water & start adding the water to the main tray, through the stainless steel mesh, but making sure not the get the seed shoots wet. I've also added a microgreens fertiliser to the water tray as well. It will be interesting to see if the fertiliser improves taste & growth rate, texture etc. I get plenty of afternoon sun on the kitchen windowsill, which seems to be enough here in Sydney. I think it's also important to remove the plastic dome as soon as the sprouthouse is ready to receive sunlight as well, otherwise it will create too much humidity under the dome and therefore more of a potential for mould forming on the seeds & microgreens. I'm currently using Mr. Frothergills microgreens from Bunnings & I have tried some other brands which I've bought online & which did seem to work pretty well, but Mr. Frothergills are very well priced seeds & there are a lot of them in the seed packets.
