Propagation is the broad term for breeding plants. There are two main forms: sexual and asexual.
Why propagation is great:
It is faster and easier than growing plants from seed
You get exact genetic replicas of the parent plant
New plants are cute and make amazing decorations
You can save money by being patient and multiplying plants yourself
Sexual propagation
Sexual propagation is what most people are used to. A plant grows a flower, the flower produces pollen, bees carry pollen from flower to flower, and when the genes mix they form seeds with the genetics to grow a whole new plant. You plant the seed and water it until it grows.
Asexual propagation
Asexual propagation works quite differently. By cutting part of an existing plant and putting it in the right conditions, you create an exact genetic replica of the original. For some plants this is the best way to grow: apples, for example, are grown through grafting, where a cutting from one apple tree is embedded into the trunk of another. Each tree then produces the same fruit. If you planted a seed from an apple, the fruit might taste completely different.
