An owner’s plant wall of pothos and aroids growing under clip-on lights

the dark spot you gave up on

Every home has one: the corner the sun never reaches, the room with the small window, the office with none at all. Plants die there, so it stays empty. Clip on a light and that spot becomes somewhere green and alive that you get to enjoy every day.

“My home is naturally dark… any plant I brought home would die a really sad death. Now though… they are happy happy plants.”

Sue E. · 5★

“…we have no windows, and they are thriving better than they did in the previous space with access to natural light. Worked so well we bought them for the whole office and transformed the space.”

  2. Three warm white light bars glowing over a philodendron on a side table in a dim living room

It glows warm white, like a reading lamp, not purple. The black necks and clip blend in with the leaves, so it can sit in the living room, the bedroom or the office. “Nice light, easy on the eyes.” (Sandra L., 5★) compare with red/blue

set it once, for your plants

Three settings decide how much light your plants get: how long, how bright, and how close.

  • The light's clip on a timber edge, with its controller and timer button on the cord below

Press the timer when you want the light to start. It stays on for 3, 6 or 12 hours, then switches off, and comes on again at the same time the next day. Or leave it on all the time.

  • Start low and step it up over a few days, so your plants can adjust. If a leaf starts to brown or look scorched, turn it down a level or two.

  • Three lit light bars of the clip-on light above a potted plant, marked with what to look for: leaves going crisp around the corners means too close, leaves reaching towards the light means too far

Start with the light bars 15 to 35 cm above the leaves, then let the plant tell you. If the leaves get crisp around the corners, it’s too close. If they reach towards the light, it’s too far.

the light

How do I set it up?

It arrives assembled, so there are no tools and no parts to fit:

  1. Clip it on to a shelf, table, windowsill or rail, up to 6 cm thick.
  2. Bend the necks so each light bar sits 15 to 35 cm above the leaves.
  3. Plug in the USB cord to the wall adaptor, switch on, pick a brightness and press the timer.

How does the timer work?

Press the timer button at the time you want the light to come on. It stays on for 3, 6 or 12 hours, switches itself off, and comes on again at the same time the next day. Leave the light plugged in so it keeps the setting.

As a guide: 12 hours for plants in low-light spaces, 6 hours for spots with indirect natural light, and 3 hours for plants in bright spots that just need a top-up.

Can I use it with a smart plug?

It doesn’t need one: the timer is built in. A smart plug can switch it off, but when the power comes back the light waits for its power button, so it won’t switch itself back on.

So it won’t work with a mains timer either. If you need it to run unattended, use its own timer and leave it plugged in.

Power: adaptor, cord length, power bank?

Adaptor: it runs on 5 V USB from the wall adaptor in the box.

Cord: 1.55 m from the clip to the adaptor. The 3 m extension is a USB cable that plugs in between the cord and the adaptor.

Power bank: any USB power bank works. Owners get about 6 to 7 hours from one, so use the wall adaptor where you can.

How many plants can one light cover?

Two or three medium plants, with a head for each, or one bigger plant with all three heads on it. The light needs to be within about 35 cm of the leaves, so for a tall plant clip it high, near the top of the plant. For a bigger collection, owners add a second light.

Will the clip fit my furniture? Will the heads stay put?

The clip opens comfortably to 6 cm, and to 7.5 cm at a stretch. It grips best on a flat, square edge; on a round rail or a slippery surface, put a strip of rubber or felt inside the jaws.

Bend each neck in one smooth curve rather than a sharp kink, and keep the heads over the clip rather than reaching far out to the side, so the weight doesn’t pull them down.

Is it 10 W per head or for the whole light?

For the whole light: all three heads together draw 10 W.

Does the controller light up at night?

A small light on the controller stays on while it’s plugged in, to show it has power and is keeping your timer. In a bedroom, turn the controller to face the wall or tuck it behind a pot.

It won’t turn on, flickers or has dimmed. What should I try?

Most of the time it’s the power, not the light. Try these in order:

  1. Push the USB plug in firmly at both ends. A plug that’s slightly loose makes the light flicker, reset its timer or cut out when the cord is moved.
  2. Try another USB wall adaptor.
  3. Unplug it for a minute to reset it, then switch it on again.

growing with it

It looks warm white. Is it really full spectrum?

Yes. It covers the whole range plants use, and puts most of its energy where they use it most: a peak in blue (400 to 500 nm) for leaves and stems, and a stronger one in red (600 to 700 nm). Mixed together, that looks warm white to us.

A red/blue light makes only those two colours, which is why it glows purple. Plants grow well under either; the full spectrum simply looks natural in a home.

Full spectrum or red/blue: which should I get?

Both grow houseplants and seedlings well, so it mostly comes down to how you want the room to look. Pick full spectrum for a living room, bedroom or office, where you’ll see the light every day; plenty of owners raise seedlings, tomatoes and chillies under it too. Pick red/blue for a seed shelf, cuttings, or a plant corner where you like the purple glow. Compare them side by side.

How far from my plants, and for how long?

Watch the leaves. If they get crisp around the corners, the light is too close. If they reach towards the light, it’s too far.

Hold the light bars 15 to 35 cm above the leaves, never closer than 12 cm. Run it 12 hours a day in a dark spot, 6 hours where there’s some indirect daylight, and 3 hours as a top-up in a bright spot.

Think about where the plant comes from: a low-light houseplant needs very little extra, while basil wants plenty. Start dim and build up over a few days. If leaves brown or look scorched, turn it down or move it further away.

Should I leave it on 24 hours a day?

No. Plants need a dark period each day to rest, so copy a natural day and night instead of running it around the clock. That’s what the timer is for.

Does it work for plants in soil? Does it give off UV?

It works the same for plants in soil, water, hydroponics or aquaponics: it simply gives them the light they use to grow. The LEDs give off a very small amount of UV, less than most household bulbs and nowhere near enough to harm your plants.

Can I use it over an aquarium or terrarium?

Yes, owners light aquarium and terrarium plants with it. Clip it to a shelf or frame above, keep the light bars out of the water, and keep the controller and adaptor somewhere dry: the buttons don’t like damp air.

What warranty does it come with, and how do I claim?

1 year warranty from the date of purchase, on top of your rights under Australian Consumer Law. It covers the light, the controller and the adaptor.

To claim, contact us with your order number and a photo or short video of the problem. You won’t need to post the light back; we’ll send a replacement or refund.

We also offer change-of-mind returns on all products.
