An owner’s hanging plants and shelves glowing pink under clip-on lights

the dark spot you gave up on

Every home has one: the corner the sun never reaches, the room with the small window, the office with none at all. Plants die there, so it stays empty. Clip on a light and that spot becomes somewhere green and alive, with a purple glow to go with it.

“Purchased two red blue grow lights for those dark corners in my home. My plants have new growth after 1 week!”

Josie · 5★

“I have 2 happy plants beside me in my study with no windows thanks to this grow light.”

Clip it to the edge of a shelf, bench or table, up to 6 cm thick, and bend the heads over your plants. One light covers two or three medium plants, or a seed tray.

  2. Close-up of the light bars, with separate red and blue diodes visible along each bar

Blue light (460 to 470 nm) drives the chlorophyll behind leaves and stems; red (620 to 630 nm) helps seeds sprout and roots and flowers form. Run one or both, each at five brightness levels.

  3. A clip-on red and blue light bent low over a tray of microgreens on a kitchen bench

Seedlings on a windowsill stretch towards the glass. Bend the heads low over the tray and they grow short and sturdy instead, so you can start tomatoes, chillies and herbs weeks before spring. “…so far no leggy seedlings” (Linzi S., 5★)

  4. The red and blue light clipped to a timber post, its controller hanging on the cord, three heads over potted plants

A metal clip and solid necks that hold their position, and a power supply and control box we spent years getting right. The LEDs are rated for 50,000 hours, and every light has a 1 year warranty.

why it glows purple

Plants grow mostly on red and blue light. This light makes just those two colours, so nearly every watt goes into growing, and together they glow purple-pink. Owners love it on a seed shelf or in a plant corner. If you’d rather the room looked natural, the full spectrum clip-on glows warm white.

“My children love ‘mummy’s pink light’ and the glow at the window is making the neighbours wonder what we’re up to!”

set it once, for your plants

Three settings decide how much light your plants get: how long, how bright, and how close.

swipe

  • A hand holding the light's controller with its four buttons lit, and a label pointing to the timer button

Press the timer when you want the light to start. It runs for 3, 9 or 12 hours, switches off, and comes on again at the same time the next day. Or leave it on all the time.

  • Pick blue, red or both, then one of five brightness levels. Start low and step up over a few days; if a leaf browns or looks scorched, turn it down.

  • The red and blue light lit above potted plants, marked with what to look for: leaves going crisp around the corners means too close, leaves reaching towards the light means too far

Start with the light bars 15 to 35 cm above the leaves, then let the plant tell you. If the leaves get crisp around the corners, it’s too close. If they reach towards the light, it’s too far.

the light

How do I set it up?

It arrives assembled, so there are no tools and no parts to fit:

  1. Clip it on to a shelf, bench, table or rail, up to 6 cm thick.
  2. Bend the necks so each light bar sits 15 to 35 cm above the plants.
  3. Plug in the USB cord to the wall adaptor, pick red, blue or both and a brightness, and press the timer.

Which colour should I use?

Both suits nearly everything, and it’s the one to start with. Blue on its own keeps leafy plants and seedlings compact. Red on its own helps seeds sprout and plants root, flower and fruit.

How does the timer work?

Press the timer button at the time you want the light to come on. It runs for 3, 9 or 12 hours, switches itself off, and comes on again at the same time the next day. Leave the light plugged in so it keeps the setting.

As a guide: 12 hours for plants in low-light spaces, 9 hours for spots with indirect natural light, and 3 hours as a top-up in a bright spot.

Can I use it with a smart plug?

It doesn’t need one: the timer is built in. A smart plug can switch it off, but when the power comes back the light waits for its power button, so it won’t switch itself back on.

So it won’t work with a mains timer either. If you need it to run unattended, use its own timer and leave it plugged in.

Power: adaptor, cord length, power bank?

Adaptor: it runs on 5 V USB from the wall adaptor in the box.

Cord: 1.55 m from the clip to the adaptor. The 3 m extension is a USB cable that plugs in between the cord and the adaptor.

Power: 10 W for all three heads together, not per head.

Power bank: any USB power bank works, for a few hours at a time, so use the wall adaptor where you can.

How many plants can one light cover?

Two or three medium plants, with a head for each, a seed tray, or one bigger plant with all three heads on it. The light needs to be within about 35 cm of the leaves, so for a tall plant clip it high, near the top. For a bigger collection, owners add a second light.

Will the clip fit my furniture? Will the heads stay put?

The clip opens comfortably to 6 cm, and to 7.5 cm at a stretch. It grips best on a flat, square edge; on a round rail or a slippery surface, put a strip of rubber or felt inside the jaws.

Bend each neck in one smooth curve rather than a sharp kink, and keep the heads over the clip rather than reaching far out to the side, so the weight doesn’t pull them down.

It won’t turn on, flickers or has dimmed. What should I try?

Most of the time it’s the power, not the light. Try these in order:

  1. Push the USB plug in firmly at both ends. A plug that’s slightly loose makes the light flicker, reset its timer or cut out when the cord is moved.
  2. Try another USB wall adaptor.
  3. Unplug it for a minute to reset it, then switch it on again.

growing with it

Why is it purple? Is red and blue enough?

Plants do most of their growing on red and blue light, and reflect most of the green, which is why leaves look green to us. This light makes only red and blue, so little of its power is wasted on colours plants barely use. Mixed together, red and blue look purple-pink.

If you want your plants to look their natural colour under the light, choose the full spectrum clip-on instead.

Red/blue or full spectrum: which should I get?

Both grow houseplants and seedlings well, so it mostly comes down to how you want the room to look. Pick red/blue for a seed shelf, cuttings, or a plant corner where you like the purple glow. Pick full spectrum for a living room, bedroom or office, where you’ll see the light every day. Compare them side by side.

How far from my plants, and for how long?

Watch the leaves. If they get crisp around the corners, the light is too close. If they reach towards the light, it’s too far.

Keep the light bars at least 10 cm from any leaves so they don’t scorch. Run it 12 hours a day in a dark spot, 9 hours where there’s some indirect daylight, and 3 hours as a top-up in a bright spot.

Think about where the plant comes from: a low-light houseplant needs very little extra, while basil wants plenty. Start dim and build up over a few days. If leaves brown or look scorched, turn it down or move it further away.

Should I leave it on 24 hours a day?

No. Plants need a dark period each day to rest, so copy a natural day and night instead of running it around the clock. That’s what the timer is for.

Does it work for plants in soil? Does it give off UV?

It works the same for plants in soil, water, hydroponics or aquaponics. The LEDs give off a very small amount of UV, less than most household bulbs and nowhere near enough to harm your plants.

Can I use it over an aquarium or terrarium?

Yes, owners light aquarium and terrarium plants with it. Clip it to a shelf or frame above, keep the light bars out of the water, and keep the controller and adaptor somewhere dry: the buttons don’t like damp air.

What warranty does it come with, and how do I claim?

1 year warranty from the date of purchase, on top of your rights under Australian Consumer Law. It covers the light, the controller and the adaptor.

To claim, contact us with your order number and a photo or short video of the problem. You won’t need to post the light back; we’ll send a replacement or refund.

We also offer change-of-mind returns on all products.
