Optimise your hydroponic garden with our compact EC meter, designed for quick and accurate nutrient concentration readings. Pre-calibrated and ready to use, this meter helps you feed your plants the right nutrients for healthier growth and prevents crop failure. Includes batteries and easy instructions.

Why do I need a nutrient meter?

Using a nutrient meter is the best way to accurately feed your plants the nutrients that they need. By accurately providing your plants with what they need, you'll notice faster and healthier growth. You also will reduce the risk of your crop failing due to having the wrong nutrient mix, which is the most common reason for failure in hydroponics! Pair it with our hydroponic nutrients for herbs and leafy greens to keep your mix exactly right. Not sure what reading to aim for? Check the ideal EC for each plant in our plant nutrient chart.

You'll find that as you test the EC (electrical conductivity) of your nutrient solution, over time you will learn a lot about how your plant consumes water and nutrients. For example in hot and dry conditions, plants typically consume more water than nutrients (as a percentage), which means the nutrient concentration will go up, as there's less water but a similar amount of nutrients! This is an issue because when the nutrient concentration is too high, it will actually suck water out through the roots of the plant (through osmosis) in order to balance out salinity levels. On the other hand, in cool conditions a plant may rapidly consume nutrients, but not water, resulting in a lower nutrient concentration in the water. Of course this is an issue as the plants won't have enough nutrients to grow!

How much nutrient should I add to my hydroponic garden?

Follow the dilution on your nutrient label. Herbs and leafy greens need roughly half the nutrients that fruiting and flowering plants do. As water evaporates, top up with water and nutrients at the same dilution.

For the most accurate results, test with a nutrient meter and check your plant against our plant nutrient chart.

What pH and EC levels do my plants need?

Most herbs and leafy greens grow well at a pH of 5.5 to 6.5 and an EC of 1.0 to 2.0. Every plant is a little different, so look yours up in our plant nutrient chart.

If EC is too high, dilute with plain water. If it is too low, add more nutrient solution. A pH meter helps you confirm your solution is in range.

Should I change my nutrient mix in summer and winter?

Slightly. In warm weather plants drink more water, so the solution gets stronger as the reservoir drops: refill with a little more water relative to nutrients. In winter plants drink less, so a slightly weaker mix avoids over-concentrating.

The most accurate way is to check with a nutrient meter before and after each refill. Indoors the difference is smaller, but still there.
