Net pots are also called net cups, net baskets, hydroponic baskets, mesh pots or hydroponic cups. They are small baskets that hold a plant and its growing medium in place in a hydroponic system.
Not all net pots are equal. Many people choose the cheapest option and run into algae growth, plant damage and difficult cleaning. A well-designed net pot, like our net cup with algae guard, can make a big difference to your hydroponic setup.
A hydroponic net pot has two essential jobs:
Many net pots on the market fall short of these basics. Here is what to look for.
Algae grows when nutrient-rich water meets light from a grow light or the sun. It can appear in the water itself if any part is exposed to light, but most commonly on top of the growing medium in net pots.
The image below shows a net pot with an open top that has allowed algae to grow.

Algae on top of your growing medium is not the end of the world, but it has downsides. It looks ugly, especially if you are growing in your living room or kitchen. It wastes nutrients that should go to your plant roots. It can damage roots and stems, as seen in the image where the moist conditions damaged the plant stem. It can also block oxygen from reaching the roots, leading to root rot or other problems. Learn more in how to stop algae growth in hydroponics.
Solution: our net cup with algae guard has a built-in algae shield that blocks light from reaching the growing medium. That helps keep your system clean, prevents nutrient loss and supports stronger root health.
This is commonly overlooked, but plant roots are incredibly strong. In lower-quality net pots, roots can grow so densely that they warp the plastic or make it impossible to remove the plant without breaking the pot. We have seen customers cut open net pots just to reuse them. If a net pot is not made from a flexible, durable material, it may permanently deform and become unusable.
Solution: our net cups are made from durable, dishwasher-safe silicone. Unlike cheap plastic net pots that can crack or degrade over time, they flex and bend, so you can reuse them again and again.
Hydroponics is not always clean. Nutrients, plant matter, particles of growing medium and other debris can collect in a system. Look for basins and net cups with smooth surfaces and openings large enough to fit a finger. Remember you may have to clean dozens of net cups at the end of each crop.
Basket-style net cups with hundreds of holes are the hardest to clean. They have hundreds of tiny crevices that need a toothbrush, and they are often rough-textured, so debris and nutrients stick to them. Most cannot go in the dishwasher.
Solution: our net cup with algae guard has smooth, curved surfaces and large inner radiuses, so it is easy to clean, and it is dishwasher-safe. Rinse and reload for your next grow.
Most standard net pots waste water through their large open slots, which let water vapour escape. Over time this means more maintenance, more evaporation and imbalanced nutrient levels.
Solution: our net cup with algae guard forms a tight seal with your hydroponic basin, reducing water loss and making maintenance easier. Less evaporation means lower costs and more efficient nutrient absorption.
If you raise seedlings for transplanting or remove plants after harvest, traditional net pots can make it very hard to avoid damaging roots. Some growers even cut their net pots open.
Solution: our open-channel top and bottom design lets roots grow freely without tangling, and the flexible silicone makes it easy to wiggle out even root-bound plants, no cutting required.
If you use more than one hydroponic system (NFT, deep water culture, aeroponics), choose a net pot that fits across different setups.
Solution: our net cup with algae guard fits all 1.5 inch (34mm) holes, so it suits NFT systems, deep water culture, hydro towers and more. See types of hydroponic systems to choose between them.
